A possible phone scam has surfaced in Oklahoma. A Stillwater woman told police she got a call from someone who claimed to be with "American Verification."

The caller knew the woman's name and "some" bank information. But he told her she needed to provide her checking account information in order to claim a pre-approved government grant.

National consumer groups say you should "never" give out your checking account or personal information. Any real financial institution will already know what they need to know.

Consumer advocates say, the federal government does not give away money for free, especially if you haven't applied for it.
