OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma voters approved a constitutional amendment banning gay marriages in the state.
State Question 711 amends the state constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. It also prohibits giving the benefits of marriage to people who aren't married and prohibits the state from recognizing same-sex marriages from other states.
State law already bans gay marriage, but supporters of the proposal say they want to prevent the possibility the state law could be invalidated by a court ruling.
