OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ With a week remaining before the election, Democratic Congressman Brad Carson says he plans to stop running negative television commercials in his race for the US Senate.

Carson says he plans to focus on the issues instead of criticizing his Republican opponent -- Muskogee physician Tom Coburn.

Carson also complained about an advertising campaign against him.

State Democratic Party Chairman Jay Parmley says two officers with Chesapeake Energy Corporation have spent $1.5-million in an effort to defeat Carson.

Some of that money went to a group called Americans United to Preserve Marriage, which aired an ad criticizing Carson on the gay marriage issue.

Coburn denounced the ad last week and called for its end. The group stopped broadcasting it but launched another.
