Five Oklahoma police departments get US Justice Department funds

(OKLAHOMA CITY) (AP) -- Five Oklahoma communities will share more than $136,000 in grants from the US Justice Department.

The money comes from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services program called Secure Our Schools.

The Owasso Police Department will receive the most -- $40,000 -- for its efforts.

Other amounts include $30,000 each for the Ponca City and the Claremore Police Departments, $20,000 for the Sand Springs Police Department and $16,137 for the Miami Police Department.

The Secure Our School program provides up to 50% of the total cost for municipalities to install metal detectors, locks, lighting and other equipment to help deter crime and violence.

The five Oklahoma communities are among 220 municipalities nationwide in 42 states to share $9.8-million in funding.
