McALESTER, Okla. (AP) -- The state Department of Corrections will ask lawmakers to approve a bond package to pay for a new prison and expansion at the state penitentiary in McAlester.
Prison spokesman Jerry Massie says the request will be for a 25-year, $380 million bond package.
The plans include a new prison to hold 2,400 inmates and to expand the penitentiary's maximum-security prison to hold an additional 1,500 inmates.
The state currently has nearly 25,000 inmates.
The proposal also calls for a five percent pay raise for prison employees and to reopen the Clara Waters Community Corrections Center which was damaged during a 2003 tornado.
