MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) A Muskogee man dies Friday night in an accident on an ice-covered bridge in Wagoner County.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the accident occurred about 6 p.m. when a tractor-trailer driven by 25-year-old Therance White Junior of Kansas City, Missouri, was northbound on the Arkansas River bridge on U.S. Highway 69 about one mile north of Muskogee.
The OHP says White took evasive action on the ice-packed roadway to avoid two vehicles that had been involved in a previous accident.
White's vehicle struck a pickup towing a traffic control trailer and pushed that vehicle into a car.
The drivers of the latter two vehicles were standing outside their vehicles, and one of them, 24-year-old Eldon McBride of Muskogee, sustained injuries during the collision and died at the scene.
The other, 29-year-old Clifford L. Haney of Wagoner, jumped from the bridge into the river to avoid injury.
Haney was taken by helicopter to a Tulsa hospital, where he was treated and released. White was not injured.
