OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A long-time state lawmaker says he's surprised by a decision to cancel the legislative session because of inclement weather.

Senator Gilmer Capps is in his 36th year in the Legislature and says he remembers many times putting snow chains on his car to make the 90-mile trip to Oklahoma City from his home in Snyder.

One time came in 1978 when some form of freezing precipitation fell every day from January 18th through February 17th. Sunny days led to some melting, but below freezing nights left roadways especially treacherous.

Senate President Pro Tem Mike Morgan says the decision to close down yesterday was set in motion when Senator Ted Fisher of Sapulpa relayed concern about driving conditions from the northeastern part of the state.

Morgan says there is plenty of time to catch up.

Yesterday also was President's Day and most state offices are closed.
