Tulsa area homeless shelters are packed with people trying to escape the brutally cold weather.

Hundreds of people are staying at the Salvation Army, Day Center for the homeless and John 3:16 Mission. Without a shelter, many would be forced to sleep in boxes or dumpsters as a way to get out of the wind.

It's hoped no one stay outside to brave the elements. Salvation Army caseworker Sherri Watson: "Especially this time of year when it is cold. We don't want anybody outside. We prefer them to be inside with us and having a warm place to stay and a meal."

James, a homeless man: "The last few days, it's been outrageously cold. And you can tell by the number of people we get in here."

All the area shelters could use donations of things like gloves, warm socks and stocking caps.
