A number of Broken Arrow families woke up early Thursday morning to a soggy mess after floodwaters rushed through their homes in the middle of the night.

News on 6 reporter Heather Lewin says homeowners have been dragging out piles of muddy carpet all day, only to find the water seeping out of walls and baseboards, causing more costly damage than many thought.

Authorities say more than 44 homes are affected, some at the peak of the flood, with waist-high water.

The biggest goal now is just getting dry. Residents brought in fans, shop vacs and more. Many were surprised at the force of the water that tore through several fences. The biggest complaint we heard wasn't the work of cleaning up, but how to cover the cost.

No one we talked to had flood insurance. Flood victim Linda Potts: "I think somebody should do something about it to help us out, to help pay for it, to help us get back together."

Potts says when she and others moved in they were told the insurance wasn't necessary because the area isn't in a flood plain.
