A woman died and her husband was rushed to a local hospital after their house burned to the ground.
The Sapulpa Fire Department told News On 6 on Sunday they witnessed neighbors lose a friend and save another's life.
“We just put as much water as we could on at that time,” Sapulpa Fire Department battalion chief Darren Inbody said.
Blackened wood and the smell of smoke looms in the air where a house once stood along Ray Lane. Sapulpa firefighters said they received the call around 3 a.m. Sunday morning.
Chief Inbody said an elderly couple lived in the house. Two neighbors stepped in to try and save them.
He said the woman was handicapped and believes the smoke and flames made it difficult to get to her. Inbody said neighbors were able to help her husband get out.
"You talk about people who do something out of the ordinary to save a neighbor,” Inbody said. “Those two guys did, and it was awesome."
When firefighters arrived on the scene, the one-and-a-half story home was fully engulfed in flames.
The fire took hours to extinguish. All that's left standing are charred house frames sitting on piles of soot.
"Our safety's got to come first,” Inbody said. “When it's fully-involved like that, you know there's nothing we can do but put water on it from the outside and hope we can get it down as quick as we can."
Inbody told News On 6 the husband was reportedly in good condition when he was taken to the hospital for a few burns and smoke inhalation.
The house is in a rural area along a very narrow road with trees surrounding the property. Inbody said he's glad the flames didn't spread to nearby homes.
"I hate to say that you get used to it or you kind of block it out, but if you want to be in this business, that's what you got to do,” Inbody said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
