Tuesday, Cub Scout Troop 1921 spent the afternoon cleaning up leaves and trash in a neighborhood near 46th Street North and Hartford.
This is the first community service project for this cub scout troop, and they are already making a different in their community.
“We’re doing community service. Right now, we’re going to fix the leaves and there is a lot of garbage here; so, we came over here just to fix it all up," said Kobe Thomas. Thomas is 10-years-old and said he is enjoying cub scouts and making a different in a neighborhood while also spending time with his friends.
“We get to talk to each other and corroborate more and we just you know hang out," said Thomas.
“There is no coincidence that the Tulsa race massacre occurred in 1921 and our troop number is 1921," said Devin Williams. Williams is one of the cub scout leaders and said the troop is made up of students from Drexel Academy. He said the boys' uniforms, transportation, and any other costs are covered.
“We want to attack the two major barriers for kids in this area and that’s accessibility and affordability of programs," said Williams.
Jasmine Hunt is the other scout leader. She grew up in North Tulsa and knows the impact cub scouts can have on young people.
“The north side really doesn’t have very much positive things about it. All you pretty much hear is guns, violence, and killings. Which is why it’s important to get them out here to show them that hey this is a new generation of boys and we’re going to change the negative things we see on TV," said Hunt.
The goal is to give back to the community while growing the number of cub scouts in their troop. “You should do it because you can learn more, do more, and if you just want to do it well you can come here," said Thomas.
