A new warning from the Department of Homeland Security said the U.S. is facing threats from violent extremists influenced by what unfolded at the Capitol on January 6th.
The Department of Homeland Security issued the warning after meeting with the intelligence community and law enforcement partners.
The alert said that groups of extremists may be inspired by false election narratives. The warning describes a "heightened threat environment" from violent groups that may be inspired by the attack on the U.S. capitol.
The former secretary of homeland security, Michael Chertoff, spoke about the threat in an interview on CBS This Morning.
"I think we need to treat it as seriously as we have been treating global jihadism as a threat to homeland security," said Chertoff.
The department does not have any information to indicate a specific, credible plot. But it is asking the public to report any suspicious activity and threats of violence, including online to local law enforcement or the FBI.
The department said the alert will last at least until April.
