The Sheriff's Department previously said they never wanted to let the men out, and a breakdown in communication is being blamed for the release.
The Cherokee Nation said it was informed of their release on March 27, and “The Cherokee Nation district court immediately issued warrants for their arrest.”
“I’m incredibly proud of our Cherokee Nation Marshal Service for their outstanding work in this case, and proud of the reputation the Nation continues to build following the historic McGirt decision,” Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. said. “For the past nine months, we have been investing in our justice system by hiring more law enforcement and staff in our courts, the Attorney General’s office and updating our criminal code. We have now filed more than 400 new cases in our Cherokee Nation district courts and continue working with the U.S. Attorneys to prosecute many other of these cases.”
