Two dozen people who live in Bartlesville are about to learn about law enforcement operations and what they can do to help fight crime.
The Citizens' Police Academy was canceled last year due to COVID-19. Capitan Troy Newell said it's all about building trust with citizens.
"That is the whole reason for the citizen police academy,” Newell said.
Newell said folks are interested to know what police do. He said the 12-week course allows citizens to learn about police operations.
"Take them to the firing range, take them with our driving training instructors and they get to ride in the car,” Newell said.
It even educates citizens about K-9s and how the department uses them. They'll also learn how officers handle traffic accidents, speeding tickets and most importantly, how citizens can report crimes.
Richard Kane Elementary School Principal Tammie Krause, said she was fortunate enough to take the course in the past. Krause said the most important thing she learned from the course is that police shouldn't be alone in the fight against crime.
"I think that is so important for our young children and our parents to see that our officers are here to help us,” Krause said.
The course starts August 31.
Applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Aug. 17. Applications can be obtained in person at the Police Department, located at 615 S. Johnstone Avenue or by emailing Capt. Troy Newell at tmnewell@cityofbartlesville.org.
