A Tulsa law firm is spending its day helping kids get ready for school.
By the end of the day Wednesday, more than 2,000 backpacks will be ready for kids all across Tulsa.
There are parents in the Tulsa community and neighborhoods who are trying to figure out how they are going to afford back to school supplies this year. The Graves McLain Law Firm is trying to alleviate that burden for some Green Country families.
"The demand is much more than we can serve. If we could do 10 schools and 4,000 backpacks, there would still be more kids that needed backpacks and supplies," said Chad McLain with Graves McLain Law Firm.
Graves McLain Law Firm is packing backpacks full of school supplies alongside employees of the Gatesway Foundation. The backpacks will be given to students at five schools in Tulsa: McClure Elementary, Springdale Elementary, Unity Learning Academy, Emerson Elementary, and Dolores Huerta Elementary.
"That will give every student in these five schools a backpack with supplies this year," said McLain.
Gatesway Foundation offered up one of its buildings and made it a space for packing backpacks, thousands of them.
The Free Backpack Program has been going for years thanks to the support of the community.
"We don't do this by ourselves, we do the logistics and the majority of the funding, but we partner with the Oklahoma Association for Justice," said McLain. "This is the community we serve, and we try to protect this community and to give back in this way to a needy population, I can't think of something that exemplifies that more.”
