A Tulsa nonprofit is doing what it can to help the city's homeless population by placing people in permanent housing. Housing Solutions Tulsa says they have found more than 100 families permanent housing since February.
Housing Solutions’ Becky Gligo said they are so glad they were able to help those families but now they are shifting their focus to people who are still homeless.
“It’s different for each person, some folks just needed help with a security deposit and now they are completely paying rent on their own,” Gligo said. “Others were able to get vouchers from the housing authority to help with rent.”
Gligo said this fast-placement initiative really kicked off when the organization was able to raise more than $1 million back in February. She said they used some of the money to place people in hotels and shelters to escape the dangerously cold weather. Gligo told News On 6 that they had never seen anything like it when the donations continued to pour in.
Housing Solutions used the rest of the money to find permanent housing for Tulsans who were homeless. The effort began in March and the last of the people from the original group were placed in July.
“Housing solutions believes that housing is a human right and everybody has a right to that housing,” Gligo said. “We are just glad we can be a part of their journey towards finding a home.”
She said they are hoping to continue the trend and get more people off the streets and into a safe place that they can call their own.
“The thing that I am just hopeful for is that we continue to have that level of care and coordination and focus on making homelessness brief and not recurring in our community,” Gligo said.
If you or someone you know needs help with finding housing you can call 211 and they will put you in the right direction.
