Four people, including two officers, were taken to the hospital after Tulsa Police say a drunk driver crashed into their patrol cars during an unrelated traffic stop.
Police say they’re thankful both officers only have minor injuries. The way the officers had their cars positioned during the traffic stop likely saved their lives.
Police say officers had pulled over a woman near Admiral and Garnett overnight when all of sudden a drunk driver crashed into their patrol car, which forced their patrol car into the woman's car. Investigators say the suspect’s car rolled over and he had to be pulled out of it.
"We train throughout the year. One of the things is, with vehicle stops, they are one of the most, if not the most dangerous thing we can do, with the unknown inside the car you are stopping, and as we saw last night with traffic,” said Officer Danny Bean with Tulsa Police.
Officers say they are trained to park their cars in a certain way during a traffic stop to protect themselves, and the person they pull over.
"It is something we have to take into consideration when we are stopping cars, either on highways or side streets, how lit it is, and watch for traffic. This is something that is always at the front of our mind as a potential thing to happen,” said Bean.
Police say one of the officers had to have stitches, but both officers and the woman are okay. Police say the drunk driver will be booked into jail after he is released from the hospital.
