The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office has a warning about a familiar phone scam that's making the rounds again.
The scammer claims to work for the Sheriff's Office and says you have a warrant. Then, they demand payment through a money card, which the Sheriff's Office says is always a red flag.
Casey Roebuck with the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office says scammers are claiming to be Sergeant Mike Moore and other TCSCO staff members. They're even spoofing the number to make it look like the call is coming from the Sheriff's Office.
Scammers will then tell you that they have a warrant for your arrest for things like missing jury duty or failing to comply with a court order. They tell you that to avoid arrest, you must pay hundreds of dollars in fines using cash cards from local stores.
However, as soon as you buy a card and give them the numbers, your money is instantly gone. Roebuck says, "They're very brazen. They're using the names of actual law enforcement officers to perpetrate a crime. I've been on the phone with these people, and they can be pretty convincing, and they've taken in some pretty intelligent people."
Remember that no law enforcement agency will ever ask you to pay a fine over the phone. If you get one of these calls, hang up immediately. Any victims are asked to call the Sheriff's Office at (918) 596-5600 to file a report.
