The Barracks in Muskogee are doing Something Good for Veterans moving into their first place after struggling with homelessness.
The little things you need when moving into your first home or apartment add up, and very quickly the little things, can turn into big things, that turn into obstacles. The Barracks in Muskogee is trying to remove those obstacles for veterans moving into their first homes after homelessness.
"Hopefully, we can alleviate some of that stress by creating these welcome home kits that will give those veterans some basic necessities," said Victor Lezama with The Barracks.
Each Welcome Home Kit will have everything from toothbrushes and toothpaste to bath towels, dishes, and kitchenware.
"We are also taking in furniture- couches, tables, love seats, washers, and dryers," said Lezama.
The Barracks is partnering with local organizations to know where to allocate these resources.
"We want to put these gifts together in a laundry basket for veterans getting into their houses. We are working with organizations who will say, 'Hey we have a veteran who is moving into a house. Can you guys help out?" said Lezama.
The Barracks won't turn any donation away. In fact, most of the donations being used to create Welcome Home Kits right now, are coming from the previous drop-offs.
"Now what we are doing is we are going through The Barracks after receiving all these donations all of these years and realizing we have an abundance of toothpaste, deodorant, toothbrushes...it is hard for people to come out and ask for help," said Lezama.
Gently used kitchen utensils, cups, bathmats, furniture like end tables and coffee tables and washers are needed.
Volunteers believe the communities generosity will keep the project going for years to come.
"We are getting all of this stuff because Muskogee and the surrounding cities here, they have such big hearts," said Lezama.
