The National Parks Service has hired a full-time investigator to ensure compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
The investigator will enhance oversight and museum compliance.
The act governs how human remains and sacred artifacts are returned to tribes once found.
There are also proposed updates to the act including strengthening the role of Tribes in the process; addressing barriers to quick and successful repatriation and increasing transparency.
The proposed changes are part of an ongoing review and will be made available for public review in 2022.
