Nearly 200 families in need have fresh produce and a hot meal thanks to a Green Country nonprofit. Food on the Move said its Community Food and Resource Festival focuses on bringing good quality groceries to food-insecure areas.
The nonprofit said food insecurity doesn't discriminate. It impacts men, women, and kids. Organizers said that's why the event is vital.
"One of 'em is to go through our produce line, which you can see here, bunch of fresh fruits and vegetables. You can load up a giant bag full of those and the other is to get a meal from one of our food truck partners," said Rusty Rowe, Food on the Move.
In between the produce line and food trucks, there are community partners.
"In the short amount of time we have them with us, we try and solve as many problems, or at least, get them in contact with as many organizations as possible," said Rusty Rowe, Food on the Move.
There are opportunities for job placement, help for food benefits, even an organization to show what you can make out of your fresh produce. Shelley Free said it's really helpful to have a resource like this.
"We were running low on fruits and veggies. I saw it on Facebook that we could get a hot meal and fresh produce, so we stopped by, and we've had wonderful success here," said Free.
She hopes others will spread the word about events like this so everyone can benefit.
"It's important that it's here but it's important that it's accessible and it's really aware to the community that it's here," said Free.
She said days like this remind her how strong the Tulsa community is.
"We're a community in Tulsa and we look out for each other," said Free.
The Food and Resource Festival happens three times a month the location changes to reach different communities.
