Discovery Lab is gearing up for classes to introduce girls to engineering.
The lab is hosting activities all week, but this weekend, there will be an event just for girls. Each day this week, the lab is offering daily activities in different engineering categories like electrical and chemical. In this weekend's classes, girls will make catapults, try coding with robots, and try electrical engineering by building circuits.
Manager of Learning Experiences Kelsey Hildebrand says female engineers in Tulsa will be there to mentor the girls and show them what's possible for them to achieve, even in a male-dominated field.
Each girl is encouraged to bring an adult role model. Hildebrand says in the engineering field, only about 20 percent of engineers are women.
Plus, as a museum, she says educators want to introduce children to STEM.
"And one of the letters is engineering. And girls are so often left out of that. So, it's really important that we take an opportunity to give them the chance to experience it and meet these women and see who they could be when they grow up,” Hildebrand said.
Registration for this weekend's classes is online for girls in 1st through 6th grade.
