The Tulsa community has come together once again to support those in Ukraine fighting for their lives. The Solidarity With Ukraine rally brought around 100 people to John Hope Reconciliation Park on Saturday afternoon.

The rally wasn’t one of sadness or defeat, but of hope, empowerment, and positivity.

Organizer Emily DelGrosso said she wanted desperately to do something to help Ukrainian American people come together in a time of need such as this one when she realized there were no events planned yet.

“I said why not us, we can do it,” DelGrosso said.

The Ukrainian community in Tulsa is extensive and you don’t have to go far to find someone with ties to the country. Tulsa is full of people who at one time lived in the country that right now is ravaged by war.

Nicole Miller lives in Owasso but many of her family members live in a small seaside village in Ukraine.

“This has been the worst week of my life, every day I’m afraid to wake up to more bad news,” Miller said.

She tells us the Ukrainian people as a whole are resilient like no other people on earth.

“My grandfather doesn’t seem to be too concerned at all,” Miller said. “He is more concerned of the dentist than the Russian invaders.”

She tells us these efforts of support here in Tulsa really are making a difference because she is sending the videos and pictures of support to everyone she knows.

Everyone at the rally said they know Ukraine will be free once again

“After Ukraine wins everyone will recognize the flag, the national flower, and everyone will know the heroic president of Ukraine,” Miller said.

Native Ukrainian Maryna White said there is even a silver lining to be found because every American knows where Ukraine is now.

There are not currently any other rallies or vigils scheduled, but Miller said they are working on some ideas.

“We’ve been thinking about what else can happen after this,” Miller said. “There will still be problems in Ukraine after this rally.”
