A nonprofit is recognizing volunteers who take time to serve Oklahomans. Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa is trying to build back from the pandemic.
"When you do help people, it is a wonderful feeling,” said volunteer Jack Goodman. Jack and his wife Cherri were looking for a way to serve when they heard about Meals on Wheels.
They've been serving for a couple of years in several capacities like taking food for pets. "We are amazed at how many people are so very thankful. They just can't tell you how much they appreciate the fact that you mowed their lawn or that you even brought them dog food,” Cherri said.
The main service is the home meal delivery program, where volunteers personally deliver meals to people's doors. Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa Chief Operating Officer Marc Bloomingdale said it typically just takes an hour to deliver five to seven meals.
He said the organization mainly serves seniors who can’t leave home often. "Our mission is really to make sure that they are well in their homes,” Bloomingdale said.
Bloomingdale said that meal delivery can be the only contact a person has that day, so volunteers also check in to make sure they're okay.
For the Goodmans, it's more than lending a helping hand. "What I like about it is serving people because I have it in my heart to do that. When I go out to mow a lawn or install a smoke alarm, every single person is so grateful,” Jack said.
