It's Arbor Week in Oklahoma and to celebrate, students planted 15 trees on Thursday in Tulsa.
Growing with care and rooted in tradition, dozens of elementary students from Riverfield Country Day School teamed up at Aaronson Park to plant new trees in honor of Arbor Week.
Leading up to national Arbor Day in late April, Arbor Week is celebrated in Oklahoma this week because experts said it's the perfect time to get new trees in the ground.
City of Tulsa Urban Forester David Zucconi said new trees are planted this week every year.
"We are just a proud city. Tulsa's always been a pretty great tree committee. And we want people to know that we care for the trees, and we care for the community. And we want people to come live here because it's a great place to live,” Zucconi said.
The city also is celebrating a big milestone.
This is the 30th year in a row for Tulsa to receive it's Tree City USA designation from the National Arbor Day Foundation.
That means the cities maintain an urban forestry department, have a community tree ordinance, spend at least two dollars per capita on urban forestry and celebrate Arbor Day.
Several other Green Country cities including Muskogee, Broken Arrow, and Bartlesville are also recognized.
Plus, Public Service Company of Oklahoma is recognized for Tree Line USA for healthy balance with utilities and trees.
Zucconi said planting trees is a positive educational experience for the students.
"Teaching them conservation and learning to plant for the future, and that's exactly what the school class from Riverfield is doing,” Zucconi said.
