New Soul Food Restaurant To Open In Tulsa's Historic Greenwood District

An authentic soul food restaurant is coming to the historic Greenwood District.

In an effort to take Fixins Soul Kitchen nationwide, owner Kevin Johnson is opening a third location right here in Tulsa.

Fixins was founded in 2019 in Sacramento, where Johnson formerly served as mayor. Before that, he was an NBA All-Star for the Phoenix Suns.

Johnson opened his second Fixins location two years ago in downtown Los Angeles, making the Tulsa location his first outside of California.

Fixins pays homage to the soul food Johnson grew up with. The menu includes fried chicken, fried catfish, oxtails, collard greens, candied yams, black-eyed peas, and even desserts like peach cobbler and banana pudding.

General Manager Derek Allen said Johnson's grandma Gladys, who is from Tulsa, was the driving force for the restaurant and one of two reasons he chose to expand here. He said the other is the city's rich black history. "We are looking to build a brand of 40 restaurants across the country within the next 10 years," Allen said. "We decided why not Black Wall Street where the beginning of black history for us really began, so this is one of our anchor stores for us to be able to do that as we expand across the country."

Fixins is looking to hire 85 people for a range of positions including line cooks, prep cooks, servers, bussers, bartenders, hosts and food runners. Those interested are encouraged to apply now. For more information on how to apply, Click Here.

The restaurant has already begun the interview process and training will start May 25th.

"You do not have to have a soul food background, you just have to have a really, really, really strong work ethic and a willingness and a drive to be successful," said Melea Morris, Manager for Front of the House Operations. "We will train you to get our food culture down, we just want to get the right people in."

Fixins will have a private ribbon cutting on May 31st. The restaurant will open to the public on June 12th with its grand opening event planned for Juneteenth.
