In just a few months, a new health and wellness facility is coming to Sand Springs Public Schools.
The new facility is thanks to a Healthy Initiatives Grant from The Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust.
The grant is designed to help entities like Sand Springs Public Schools improve the health and quality of life for staff, students, and teachers.
In order to apply, the district needed to show a commitment to health and wellness. That is something Superintendent Sherry Durkee said they are always working on.
The district was ultimately awarded a $60,000 grant. That money will go toward renovating an old wrestling room and filling it with equipment like free weights, treadmills, CrossFit bikes, and row machines.
"It’s still a relatively old space as the whole building is. But it’s amazing what you can do with a space that the community is beloved, too, and wanted to keep and how you can turn that into something spectacular, which is what I think we’ve done," Durkee said.
The district hopes that this new facility will be open to teachers and staff sometime around spring break.
