Tulsa Police say a good Samaritan is dead after he was hit by a car while directing traffic after a crash near Pine and Mingo. Investigators say the man was just trying to help out until police arrived, but another driver didn’t see him.
Officers say the man did nothing wrong, and it’s human nature to try to help when witnessing something like a car wreck. Police are offering tips for anyone who may be in a similar situation.
Investigators say a car heading northbound on Mingo smashed into another car pulling out of a parking lot. They say both of those drivers were OK, but people who saw the crash started doing whatever they could to help.
Officers say that includes the good Samaritan who went into the street to help direct other cars until first responders arrived.
“It’s a hundred percent human nature to try to assess the situation and help as you can,” said Capt. Richard Meulenberg, Tulsa Police. “That’s what was happening here. Unfortunately, someone lost their life while doing the right thing.”
Police say crashes can often be chaotic scenes with debris scattered and other cars trying to avoid the situation. To make matters worse, investigators say this scene was dangerous since it happened while it was still dark out.
If you are caught in a similar situation and want to help, police say there are things you can do to make yourself more visible.
“If you have something that’s lightly colored, take your cell phone and turn your light on,” said Meulenberg. “Get something that makes you stand out.”
Police have not released the man’s name. They say the driver of the car that hit him stayed on scene and cooperated with police and they won’t face any charges.
