Christmas Activities At Shepherd's Cross Farm In Claremore

Shepherd's Cross, an authentic working farm in Claremore, is bringing the Christmas story to life.

"Christmas at the Farm" takes place on the second and third weekends in December. The major draw for people is the living manger scene, a tradition at Shepherd's Cross for over three decades. It includes character portrayals, the story of Jesus' birth, and live animals to take guests back to the original Christmas night.

"Jesus was born in a manger, there was not any room for them in an inn. So, they got to stay in a manger with the animals," said Director Diane Dickinson. "One of the things that people say that really helps them realize the depth of the story is the smell. You can smell the manger."

The living manger scene can be viewed daily throughout the two weekends from the moment the farm opens at 10 a.m. to its last showing at 7:15 p.m.

Dickinson said it is a great reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

"In our world today, it is hard to find peace and so people come seeking peace and they find it," she added.

The Martin family has visited the farm in December for nine years. Barb Martin said she and her husband want their kids to know the Christmas story.

"We want them to see and to feel what Christmas is about and that is not necessarily Santa and presents," she said, "It is about thinking of others and about talking about the gift of Christmas."

Christmas at the Farm also features crafts, yard games, wagon rides, tours of the silo, and fiber arts demonstrations. Admission is donation-based and all proceeds benefit missions.
