Tattoo artists from all over the state and across the country will be in Green Country on Tuesday to help with the "Stop the Hate in the 918" event being held at the Case Community Center in Sand Springs from noon to 8 p.m.
Jamy Magee joined Six In The Morning on the Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch. He is the owner of The Parlour Hair & Ink in Sand Springs.
The free event was started years ago to help people cover up their gang-related, racial and hate tattoos. Magee talked to Tess Maune about what inspired him to do this.
"It was just a realization that anything going on on social media is kind of worthless. So, we decided to do something, and this was the brainchild of that," he said.
It's more than covering up a tattoo. It's about helping people reclaim their lives.
"We're covering up things from people's past and mistakes they've made. Hopefully, they can improve their future," Magee said.
The change is seen by the person's children, their colleagues at work, everybody.
There will be 20 tattoo artists at the 2024 event, four times the number from 2023.
"So that's a big deal for us," Magee said.
The event is first-come, first-served -- but it can't be a request to just remove anything. For example, the artists will not help you remove a tattoo with your ex-girlfriend's name.
Those who come out to the event will be able to donate blood with $10 from each donation going directly to a fund benefitting kids in the community.
