One Edmond family finds comfort in life’s surprises. Their son Cal’s childhood passion brought them a unique pet. Owning a pet octopus is not something scientists recommend. However, the Clifford family knew they were ready for the challenge. The addition to their family is only the beginning.

Joy can be found in life’s unexpected moments. Kari and Cameron Clifford find comfort in living in Edmond with their boys Cal and Lyle. “There’s new life and growth,” Kari said.

Deep into the depths of Cal’s home -- he'll show you the way around this house and he’ll tell you the key to his heart. One animal ‘Octo-pies’ his thoughts. Octopus photos and toys blanket his bedroom walls. “He’s obviously extremely passionate,” Cameron said.

Cameron had the thought of buying Cal his very own Octopus. “Theoretically it is possible,” Cameron said.

His son’s emotional reaction painted the picture of what the opportunity meant to Cal. “It’s fun to do it together,” Cameron said. “It’s pretty cool,” he said.

Cameron built a tank and a water system to support Terrance the octopus. “It’s been my childhood dream,” Cal said.

More than three million people have liked their videos on TikTok. Their story has rippled nationwide from the New York Times to NPR. “It’s just a miracle to have an octopus in my brother’s room,” Lyle Clifford said.

A new pet brought new lessons. “She’s a girl – which we learned,” Cal said.

After more than 50 babies hatched, they learned that fun fact. “This was never even supposed to happen,” Cal said.

The family worked with a retired biologist to care for these babies. “There’s so many responsibilities,” Cal said.

Kari saw Cal venturing out of his shell, embracing his love for wildlife, and time with his dad. “It was sweet,” Kari said. “That is something I really appreciate and won’t take for granted.”

Cameron found beauty in life's unplanned moments, but he learned his family is exactly where they’re supposed to be. “That’s been a great thing to learn,” he said. “You can find meaning in unexpected things.

Terrance is in her golden years and won't be around much longer -- but the family plans to keep a couple of her babies. The rest of the hatchlings are going to other homes.
