Former President Donald Trump is set to campaign Saturday in Wilmington, North Carolina, as calls grow for Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson to drop out of the gubernatorial race following a report linking him to offensive comments.
Trump supporters are eagerly anticipating the rally, where the former president will address his base in the crucial swing state.
"It's kind of surprising that it's a swing state to me. I feel like most supporters around here are for Trump," said Andrew Best, a North Carolina resident.
Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, a frequent Trump ally, will not appear at the rally. CNN reported that Robinson allegedly made antisemitic and sexual remarks on a pornography website, referring to himself as a "Black Nazi." Robinson denies the allegations.
"Those are not the words of Mark Robinson. You know my words, you know my character, and you know that I have been completely transparent in this race and before," Robinson said.
Despite Robinson's vow to stay in the governor's race, the Trump campaign has begun distancing itself from him as North Carolina's 16 electoral votes hang in the balance. Some Trump supporters, however, are reserving judgment.
"Are these allegations true against this person or are they not true? If they're not true, Trump will continually endorse him. If they are true, he will probably separate himself in some way, shape, or form," said Joseph Orgeron, a South Carolina resident.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump's Democratic challenger, is taking a break after holding a rally in Madison, Wisconsin, where she emphasized her stance on abortion.
"Now in more than 20 states, we have Trump abortion bans, many with no exceptions even for rape and incest. It is immoral," Harris said.
Harris is scheduled to attend a fundraiser in New York tomorrow, while Trump will spend the day at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
