City leaders in Claremore are honoring those who served our country with a series of banners in the downtown district.

The banners include a picture of that veteran, what branch they served in and when they served.

Claremore Main Street said the 19 banners went up earlier in May, including one for Gary Steuart, who served in the Army from 1969 to 1971.

That’s video of Steuart’s daughter, Hanna Pope, surprised him with his banner, which is in front of the Spectrum Paint store in Downtown Claremore. Steuart says he fought back tears in that moment.

“She says ‘look up there’ and I go ‘oh my lord’ or something. I think...you’ve gotta be kidding me! I was shocked. Totally shocked, I was stunned,” Steuart said.

Claremore Main Street said they plan to keep the banners up until the 4th of July.
