Union To Discuss Possibility Of Changing Mascot

Union Public Schools will meet July 13 to discuss the possible change of their mascot.

It isn't the school's first time with the topic. The debate whether to keep the school's "Redskins" mascot came up almost 20 years ago.

Union Superintendent Kirt Hartzler said in a statement, "It's important that we reconsider this name to see if it aligns with the district's core values that we have today."

Those who want the mascot to be changed said they hope the national debate on similar topics could help convince the board.

"Please look at your history books, please look at what the word Redskins really means, and when you look at what it really means, come back and say to us you think you're honoring us," said Linda Leaf Bolin, the Greater Tulsa Cherokees founder.

The board meeting is scheduled for July 13 at 7 p.m.
