Happening this weekend, some local groups are coming together to dedicate a historic tree in memory of the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial.
Plantseads, the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission, and others are hosting the ceremony at 12 p.m. Saturday in front of Carver Middle School where the tree is. Plantseads officials said the tree is almost 100-years-old, making it one of the only things left in the Greenwood community from around the same time as the Tulsa Race Massacre.
Officials said the 95-year-old tree is a symbol of growth and resilience after a devastating event in history so it is more than necessary to do something to honor it.
Each person in attendance will also be given an American Elm seedling, the same kind of tree as the one being dedicated, to plant and take home with them as a reminder of what Tulsa has gone through. Founder of Plantseads Bryan Meador said those seedlings will give the ability to remind people of this tree for years to come instead of just something that lasts through the weekend.
He said it is important for people to know the history of this tree and Greenwood.
“Tulsa has got a past and a history of racial violence it’s important to acknowledge that and through acknowledging that we can work towards something better,” Meador said.
The event is open to the public, but organizers are trying to keep the event small due to COVID-19.
