To remember nearly 3,000 lives lost, many people gathered today around the steel beam from the World Trade Center to talk about a day that many will never forget.
"Everybody that was alive then knows exactly where they were when they heard the news. It was one of those events," said Carloyn Thornton with the Daughters of American Revolution.
Today the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution held the annual remembrance ceremony in Bixby.
Today was about remembering and honoring the civilians and emergency personnel who died during the tragic events 20 years ago.
"We don't want to forget those who died senselessly that day," said Thornton.
The memorial at Washington Irving Park tells the story of what happened that day.
The group, The Friends of Irving Foundation, placed a steel beam from the World Trade Center just one year after the attacks.
The memorial has markers that encircle the steel beam serving as a timeline of events.
The group president, Walter Gund, said people may not know about everything that happened that day.
"It's not just about the I-Beam or about New York City it's about the whole event that day," said Gund.
He said that's why events like today's remembrance service are so important.
"They forget. People forget. You have to constantly remind them," said Gund.
The organizers said hopefully this event serves as education and a reminder, so history doesn't repeat itself.
"We just pray that we won't ever go through this again. That's why we do this, so we won't have to do it again," said Thornton.
