Authorities identified the victim as 74-year-old Larry Powell of Broken Arrow. Police say Powell was transported to Hillcrest Hospital in Claremore in critical condition due to the incident.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Oologah Police, and other first responders were on the scene of a near-drowning along the Hawthorn boat ramp on Oologah Lake around 7:30 Wednesday morning.

According to OHP, an older man let go of his boat at the dock by accident and tried to jump in and grab it but couldn’t keep up and started to struggle. Another man, who troopers say was his friend, jumped in and to get him and brought him to shore.

Medics performed CPR and he was transported to a hospital. Troopers say the man was alive when he left.
