A program in Owasso is giving people with special needs the chance to take the soccer field and learn physical and social skills along the way.
Parents and organizers say the TOPSoccer program is about more than coming together each week to practice soccer.
TOPSoccer is a national organization that gives kids and adults with special needs the chance to learn the game and also grow in their communication skills.
Parents say they have noticed positive changes in their kids since joining the program.
“This journey has taught him how to socialize with his peers, he has been able to make friends, he has learned teamwork, this is almost like family to him,” said Chika Okwufulueze, whose son Ben is part of the program.
TOPSoccer aims to bring kids who usually might be on the sidelines onto the field.
“Children that have special needs need to belong somewhere, and that is what TOPSoccer brings. It gives them a place to belong to,” said Okufulueze.
Director Adam Kenes says they want people with special needs to know they are valued.
“There are a lot of people who are forgotten, for maybe a title that they’ve received, maybe a diagnosis that they’ve gotten from a doctor, and my answer to that is, don’t write anyone off,” said Kenes.
Because Kenes says, the game of soccer brings people together.
“This beautiful game of soccer is for everyone. Not just the elite, not just the U.S. Soccer team, but those that are in a wheelchair, those that are deaf, or blind, can also play it. So never write someone off from a physical, mental, or emotional challenge.”
The TOPSoccer program plays each Saturday afternoon at the Owasso Soccer Complex.
