The Lemon-Aid Project kicked off its Labor Day celebration at Mother Road Market where families picked up lemonade kits to raise money for Lindsey House.

Lindsey House is an organization that board helps single mothers overcome difficult situations.

"We give them life skills, financial coaching; basically, kind of help them take it to the next level in life,” board member Tim Dombrow said.

The Lemon-Aid Project started in 1994 when an 11-year-old girl and her family wanted to give back to those in need.

Katie Eller Murray was that 11-year-old girl and said she hopes to teach others to have the same heart.

"Hearing stories that families are using this, not as a lesson, but just as an eye opener for conversation with their children about giving back knowing what they have," Eller Murray said.

Several volunteers helped pass out the lemonade kits which will be used to set up stands all over Tulsa over the Labor Day weekend.

Eller Murray said when families work together, it teaches kids to step outside of their comfort zones and be more successful.

"They can say yes when people would normally say, ‘No, I'm not comfortable with that.' They have a broader reasoning of, ‘You know what, I’m going to test this out and I’m going to see where it goes and if it fails, okay. I'll figure something else out.’ They're willing to try a lot more,” Eller Murray said.

Not only is the project helping raise money, but it’s also teaching families important life values: To give back to others and maintain positive relationships.

Dombrow said it’s rare for children to learn lessons like these.

"It will basically teach them to give back to the community and if you've been blessed to give back. I think that's what life is about. We need to be good stewards while we're on this earth and I think it's all about that," Dombrow said.
