Some parents of kids attending Council Oak Elementary School said they were uneasy after seeing a woman armed with a gun across the street from the building. Despite the concern, Tulsa Police said the woman did not break any laws.
School staff acknowledged the woman had the right to carry a gun off school property but still made changes to the end-of-day dismissals.
In a video sent to News On 6, a woman is seen holding a campaign sign for Tulsa School Board District 1 candidate Jared Buswell while also wearing a holster with a gun in it.
The woman was spotted by parents as they dropped their kids off for the start of the day.
“I don’t care if you have a gun or if you have a gun license to carry, that doesn’t bother me,” a parent said. “Across from a school, that’s what’s unsettling."
Tulsa Police said they responded to the scene and talked with the woman. While it was concerning to some parents, officers said the woman was within her rights to carry a gun.
“There’s no problems, there’s no confrontations,” said Officer Danny Bean, Tulsa Police. “They knew their rights and they were well within their rights. No law was being broken."
In a letter to parents, Council Oak elementary staff acknowledged the woman was not breaking the law, but said “it was concerning to have an unknown individual standing across the street from our school during a time when students and families are walking and driving to campus.”
The school shifted to an inside dismissal process as an extra precaution. Extra Tulsa Police officers were also on site at the end of the day.
Josh Buswell’s campaign did not respond to inquiries for comment.
