Elementary school students cruised around Tulsa on bikes on Wednesday to cross the finish line with Bike Club Tulsa.
The End-of-Year rally comes after months of weekly after-school bike rides. Four hundred students rode from USA BMX Headquarters to Gathering Place for four miles after a year of developing skills and training. Bike Club is a cycling nonprofit serving kids at Tulsa Public Schools.
The organization hosts 31 after-school clubs as well as programs for third graders all centered around youth cycling. Program Manager Lance Miller said the club rides once a week after school.
"It's really cool to see there will be students today riding these four or so miles that did not know how to ride a bike in the fall," Miller said.
For the End-of-Year rally, hundreds of third to fifth-grade students arrived at USA BMX for a full-day field trip. The day started with programs from BMX riders and the Quickie Mart Freestyle team. Then the students took off for the four-mile ride and spent the afternoon at the park. One hundred volunteers helped with the ride.
"Some of these students probably ride their bikes at home all the time and some of these students, when they get a bike here next week at the end of our program, might be the first bike they've ever owned," Miller said.
Bike Club will start again in the fall with a new group of students.
