TULSA, Okla. - Storms stayed around on Friday after severe storms swept across the state on Thursday night.
Several residual outflow boundaries near northern and eastern Oklahoma served as a focal point for additional scattered thunderstorms that developed in the evening and overnight. The upper airflow was weaker Friday afternoon compared to Thursday, but a few strong and severe storms will remained possible late Friday afternoon through the early evening hours. The primary threat was large hail and damaging winds. Not every location experienced storms.
As the main upper air trough was centered through the middle part of the country, a new disturbance will arrive from the Mexican plateau will influence Texas and Oklahoma this weekend. Scattered showers and storms will be likely Saturday morning across part of Texas into southwestern Oklahoma. As the day progresses, scattered showers and storms will become more numerous on Saturday afternoon into the early evening hours. Despite the weaker upper airflow, a few locally strong or near-severe storms will remain possible. Late Saturday evening and early Sunday morning, another subtle shortwave brings increasing shower and storm chances Sunday. This will also allow additional showers and some storms throughout the day Sunday. A weak cold front is expected late Sunday evening into early Monday, with yet some additional showers and storms.
Temperatures on Friday afternoon reached the mid to upper 80s with minor heat indices near 90. Saturday morning lows in the 60s will be followed by afternoon highs in the lower 80s. Temperatures for Mother’s Day will start in the 60s with afternoon highs near the lower 80s.
The active weather pattern will occasionally bring showers and storms by Saturday afternoon and evening, with slightly higher coverage expected Sunday. While a few strong to severe storms will remain possible for Saturday, moderate to locally heavy downpours will become the primary threat Saturday evening into Sunday.
