Family and friends are mourning the loss of a 16-year-old Bixby student who was killed in a car crash in Bixby on Jan. 11.

Bixby Police said Shelby Binney’s dad was the driver, and her mom and siblings were also in the SUV that crashed.

Police said Elliot Binney was speeding while trying to pass another car in a no-passing zone and that he ran from the scene after the crash near 171st and Memorial.

At the crash site, flowers and a balloon honor Shelby’s life.

There is also a knocked-down street sign, broken fence, and debris from the SUV Shelby was thrown out of.

“A vehicle was discovered to have passed in a no-passing zone and lost control in the rain, and the vehicle flipped and overturned,” said Chief Todd Blish.

Chief Blish said Thursday night around 9:20, Shelby, her parents, and two siblings were on their way home when her dad caused the crash.

“He left the scene on foot before officers could arrive, and he was able to obtain a second vehicle and fled, and we were able to track that vehicle electronically and found him in Checotah,” said Chief Blish.

Shelby was a long-time member of Oklahoma Xtreme Allstar Cheer and Tumbling in Bixby. The gym said the high school sophomore was a bright light, kind and hard working.

A close friend said Shelby always encouraged everyone.

Chief Blish called this case devastating.

“It tears at your soul when a child is killed in a traffic accident, especially accidents or incidents that are preventable,” said Chief Blish. “It affects that family. It’s a burden they’re going to bear the east of their life, not to mention her friends and family and our officers that responded to the scene. They’re affected by this too.”

Court records show Elliott Binney had several dismissed cases over the last 20 years, including leaving the scene of a crash in 2016.

The Tulsa County District Attorney said his office would look into that and handle this case once the report was done.

Elliott Binney is at the Tulsa County Jail being held for first-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and passing in a no-passing zone.
