Oklahoma-Based Singer-Songwriter Ken Pomeroy Performs At SXSW Music Festival

SXSW is a music festival that takes place in Austin, Texas each year. Tulsa Film, Music, Arts & Culture invites up-and-coming local musicians every year to the event.

Folk/Americana musician Ken Pomeroy is from Moore, Oklahoma. She attended SXSW for the first time this year and released a new song on Feb. 21 titled "Cicadas."

She joins us on the Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to share more about her music and experience at SXSW.

How long have you been singing and writing music?

"Since I was 9 years old, I started writing and playing music. My first gig was at 13 and I have been playing ever since."

How would you describe your genre of music?

"Singer-songwriter Americana mostly, with a tinge of country."

What is the inspiration behind your song "Cicadas"?

"I wrote it right as I was turning 20 and going through so much in my life. I was learning more about myself and coming to terms with parts of me as a person, explaining different experiences I have had metaphorically."

How did "Cicadas" come to be featured in "Reservation Dogs"?

"Sterlin Harjo and I had been mutuals for a bit and he reached out curious about new music coming out. I sent him 3 unfinished new ones and he chose 2/3 for S3 ep.9!"

Does Oklahoma influence your music and if so, how?

"Growing up in Oklahoma definitely has influenced my writing, especially being Native and growing up in a community. I have had so many Oklahoma singer-songwriters help me along the way as a young artist."

What was your experience like at SXSW?

"My experience has been pretty wild. It is my first SXSW so I had no idea what to expect. Our Tulsa House showcase went so well! So many people we knew were there and it was such a feeling of excitement and community, especially in a different city!"

"Norman Music Festival, East Coast and Midwest tour with John Moreland, Northeast tour with Jenny Owen Youngs, and Midwest shows with Iron & Wine."
