Brent VanNorman's campaign says the candidate for Tulsa mayor will file for a recount of Tuesday's election.
The race was close.
Only 438 votes, according to preliminary numbers, separate VanNorman and Karen Keith, who finished second.
Keith and Monroe Nichols, who came in first, are separated by only 272 votes.
VanNorman said Thursday he fully trusts the electoral process and this request is a part of that system.
VanNorman's full statement:
Monroe Nichols responded to the request for a recount. His full statement:
"I'm proud of our campaign and how we performed on Tuesday. I have every confidence in the results and that they will be once again validated. While I do not believe a recount to be in anyway necessary, I have no issue with Mr. VanNorman's request."
In a statement, Karen Keith's campaign said:
“I respect Brent VanNorman and it is his right to spend $12,000 for a recount if he chooses, but I strongly believe the results will be exactly the same. I am proud to live in Oklahoma where our elections are safe and secure thanks to great election board staff and poll workers.”
Election Board Secretary Gwen Freeman says no papers have been filed, and until they are a recount will not be scheduled.
